| Reply | Author | Date | | I just bought three paintings today in an antique shop in Norfolk, Virginia, USA signed Nadia Werbitzky and dated 1970. The seller said they were by a Russian artist. Any other information would be appreciated. | Carl Helvie | 2005-07-16 23:51:33 | | Hello, I have been searching for Mrs.Lembersky for a few months now. She was an artist, married a Russian American John Lembersky, who was an American diplomat. Her former name was Nadia Werbitzky and she signed her paintings with her maiden name. So far I know is that she is living in Mariupol Ukraine, where at I dont know I have been searching for her for months, I have photographs & postcards that belong to her and I want to return them to her or her family. I do know she has 2 daughters who may be living in Mariupol with her. She would be about 83 now, I also know that she has had some health problems, diabetes, etc. That is all I know of her. So you found paintings of hers in Norfolk VA! I am not sure if I will ever find her, I would love to return these items to her! I was also told that she sometimes makes trips to Florida but not sure if she will make it this year??? I dont even know what she looks like, the photographs that belong to her mostly are not marked and I dont speak Russian or Ukrainian so I can not translate them. I do know that during WW2 her family was sent to germany in a labor camp, her father was sent to a gulag, and after the war she studied art at a university, & then moved to Toronto Canada, then met her husband John. This is all the info I know of her. I may never find her or her family but hopefully someone that checks this board and is from Mariupol may know her, I pray someone will contact me with more info on her, that is all I can give you about Mrs. Lembersky/Nadia. I got most of this info from someone who has met her within the past 5 years, they own a lot of her paintings too. And they had here wonderful paintings displayed at an exhibit. Oh I will tell you that she has won an award for one of her paintings at an exhibit in germany during the 70s. So you are so lucky to have found 3 paintings of her, lucky you! I hope the info I posted has helped you. I am just hoping someone else will see my postings too that can help me. well good luck with the paintings at whatever you plan to do with them...enjoy them they are a treasure and a reflection of Nadia's soul on that canvas! Cheers, Slainte-Lori | Lori | 2005-07-23 20:03:49 | | I Purchased a Painting in Sperryville Va. which the owner got from an estate sale(post death) about 3-4 yrs ago. I also obtained a unfinished wood painting and one Icon painting along with a few personal things such as a beautiful box ( probably eastern European). | SMcHugh | 2005-08-28 22:34:20 | | Hello, So you have a few paintings of Nadia Werbitzky's? Maybe the belongings once belonged to Nadia. If it is an icon painting, then yes it maybe from the Ukraine or Eastern Europe. I am curious on what you have. =) Lucky you to own some of her artwork! I only have old photographs & postcards that belong to her. My intentions are to return them to her daughter once I am contacted by her. I think and feel Nadia Werbitzky's artwork has such passion and soul! I have only seen her exhibit online, which those are own by a lady I have contacted this year. Well, that is wonderful that you have some of her art work. I hope they bring you joy. =) I don't know any more about Nadia's life or her family, that is why I have been posting such an extensive search to find more and like I mentioned I want to return the photographs to her family. So if by chance anyone else that has read these messages, thank you and please if anyone has known Nadia Werbitzky, her sisters, or her parents or if anyone else has any useful information on her artistic life please leave a message on this board. =) I also want to thank you for leaving a message about the items you have...cheers, Lori | Lori | 2005-09-08 03:09:05 | | I started crying when I read your first posting and then the replies to your postings. I knew Nadia, her mother, and both of her daghters very well. Here husband's name was Alexs, not John. He worked for the U.S. State Dpt. and they met in Buffalo, NY, moved to Iran, Where their girls were born, moved to Germany, then to FL, USA. I was married to Lucy, older daughter, for five years. I cherish the endless hours we spent togethr, chatting and talking about her life and her oldest sister, her adventures. She used to have a rough-draft of a book her mother wrote about their time in the labor camp in Germany, She long to publish it. I would love to tell you more.
