Information about Mariupol, Ukraine
Mariupol is a port city situated in the south-east part of Ukraine on the coast of the Azov Sea, at the creek of the the Kalmius River. Mariupol was known already at the beginning 16-th century as the Cossack fortress Kalmius and then in 1780 after the migration of the Crimean Greeks to this region it was renamed Mariupol at their request.
The population of Mariupol is around 480,000 people. The city is located at the distance of 160 km from Donetsk.
Mariupol is an important seaport and industrial center. There are two large metallurgical works (one of them “Azovstal), whose production makes a considerable part of the export of Ukraine. Mariupol is also a seaside and mud cure resort.
Among places to visit in Mariupol there are the City Planetarium, the Regional Philharmonic Society, the Regional Museum of Fine Arts, the City Circus.
